Flowers, like everything else, are temporary. Awareness of that only enhances my appreciation of them. They start from almost nothing and slowly grow, sometimes with bends and twists and great reaching to find the sun. As soon as they bloom they also start to expire and their sweet scent becomes more intoxicating with each passing day. I think its impossible to deny that flowers are symbolic, each variety reminds me of a different time, transports me to a particular season and suspends or bends reality in a way that makes me believe in magic. Some bloom slowly, some overnight. I have spent so many years memorizing their patterns, the colours that each type can be found in, how each one needs care. Floral design should mimic nature to the level of fantasy. That’s how I feel. Exaggerated shape, colour and texture tickle my brain.

I always gravitate towards locally grown and seasonal florals first. Honouring nature and supporting our economy is an important part of my floral practice.

When local florals aren’t available or don’t lend themselves to the vision I will go to great lengths to find what will. Attention to detail is a nagging but efficient part of my approach and after over 17years of flowering for events I have come to regard planning as the most important part of the process. I prefer to book in advance, at least 6months for weddings and large events, 2 weeks for funeral or celebrations of life.
